Overview

Route Overview

Join an exhilarating 14-day adventure through Peru, starting in the vibrant city of Lima, moving on to the historic charm of Cusco, and culminating in the breathtaking landscapes of Machu Picchu.

Weather Patterns

  • Lima: Temperatures stay mild in this coastal desert city — expect 14-20°C with essentially no rain (0-1mm) across June, July, and August, so Lima isn't the deciding factor for timing this trip.
  • Cusco: This is the region's real dry season, with cool days and cold nights: June (5-17°C, 2 rain days, 7mm), July (4-18°C, 3 rain days, 10mm), and August (5-18°C, 8 rain days, 21mm) — August starts to see a slight uptick in rain as the season turns.
  • Machu Picchu: The driest stretch of the year, though not rain-free: June (9-18°C, 11 rain days, 44mm), July (9-18°C, 10 rain days, 46mm), and August (9-19°C, 15 rain days, 71mm).

The clearest pattern across the three stops: Cusco's nights turn cold in the dry season, and Machu Picchu keeps a baseline of cloud and light rain even in its best months — this is the driest the region gets, not a guarantee of clear skies.

Planning Considerations

Traveling during the dry season (June-August) is the most reliable window for hiking and outdoor exploration in Cusco and Machu Picchu, though cold nights in Cusco and occasional rain at Machu Picchu are worth planning around. Pack warm layers for Cusco's evenings, and bring rain protection for Machu Picchu even on what should be one of its driest days.

What This Depends On

  • Your flexibility: If you can adjust dates by a week, you may catch better weather
  • Your priorities: Outdoor plans vs. indoor experiences — decide what matters more for your timing
  • Your budget: Traveling outside this window often costs less, but conditions are far less predictable, especially in Cusco and at Machu Picchu
