Route Overview

This 10-day adventure takes you from the bustling streets of Hanoi to the breathtaking mountains of Sa Pa. Experience vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and stunning natural beauty.

Weather Patterns

In Hanoi, the dry season (December to February) brings mild temperatures and modest rainfall: December sees 14-22°C with 7 rain days and 33mm of rain, January cools slightly to 14-21°C with 11 rain days and 62mm, and February holds at 15-22°C with 10 rain days and 52mm.

Sa Pa, high in the mountains, is a different story: this is genuinely cold season there, not just dry — December and January both run 8-14°C, dipping into properly cold territory, before February warms slightly to 9-15°C. Rain is more frequent here than in Hanoi (13-15 rain days a month, 75-123mm), including frequent mist and light drizzle typical of mountain winters — this is the region's driest stretch, not a guarantee of clear skies.

Planning Considerations

The real tradeoff here is temperature, not rain: Hanoi stays mild and comfortable throughout, while Sa Pa turns genuinely cold, especially overnight, with occasional mist and drizzle even in its driest months. Pack warm layers for Sa Pa regardless of which month you choose, and consider whether you'd rather hike in Sa Pa's crisp December-January cold or its slightly milder February.

What This Depends On

  • Your flexibility: If you can adjust dates by a week, you may catch better weather
  • Your priorities: Outdoor plans vs. indoor experiences — decide what matters more for your timing
  • Your budget: The warmer months outside this window often cost less, but conditions are far wetter
