Route Overview
Seven days down the Rhine from Cologne to Frankfurt, with four Christmas markets that open on slightly different dates and close on slightly different ones. Cologne is the anchor: six markets within walking distance of each other, from the big one under the cathedral to the harbour market by the Chocolate Museum. Koblenz sits where the Moselle meets the Rhine, Mainz has the historic market on the cathedral square, and Frankfurt closes the trip with the market on the Römerberg. Trains run every hour or better between all four cities, and none of the legs takes more than 90 minutes.
Weather Patterns
December along the Rhine is mild by German standards but wet. Cologne averages highs of 7°C and lows of 3°C with rain or drizzle on 16 days of the month, the wettest stop on this route at 84mm. Koblenz is similar at 7°C to 2°C with 14 wet days. Mainz and Frankfurt are a degree cooler, 6°C highs and 1°C lows, and a little drier at 12 to 13 wet days. Snow is rare at river level. Expect grey skies, an umbrella most days, and dark by half past four, which is when the market lights do their work.
Planning Considerations
The markets do not share a calendar. In 2026 Cologne's cathedral market runs from 16 November to 23 December and is closed on Totensonntag, 22 November, while the harbour market opens on 13 November and runs into the first days of January. Koblenz has announced 20 November to 3 January, closed on 24, 25 and 26 December and on New Year's Day, though its dates were still provisional when checked. Mainz opens on 26 November and Frankfurt on 23 November, and both are finished by 22 or 23 December. The safe window for all four is the first three weeks of December. A trip in the last week of December finds Cologne's harbour and old-town markets and Koblenz still open, Mainz and Frankfurt closed. Exact dates for every market on the route are on the Christmas markets hub, checked against the organisers' own pages.
Why This Depends on YOUR Trip
- Will every market be open on my dates? – Only between 27 November and 22 December do all four cities have a market running. Outside that window the route still works, but plan Mainz and Frankfurt as the early stops.
- How much rain should I plan for? – Around one day in two along this route in December. The markets stay open in rain; the trick is to pair each afternoon with an indoor anchor, the cathedral in Cologne, the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, the Städel in Frankfurt.
- Can I do this without a car? – Yes, and it is easier. Every stop has its market within 15 minutes' walk of the main station, and the Rhine valley line between Cologne and Mainz passes the castles and vineyards you would otherwise drive.
- Is it cold enough to feel like Christmas? – Not reliably. Lows sit around freezing and highs near 6°C or 7°C, so pack for damp cold rather than deep cold, and expect mulled wine to matter more than snow.
